Dr. Cheryl Yelverton brings a unique understanding of Eastern and Western medicine to her practice of acupuncture and herbal medicine. She attended medical school at Duke University and completed a surgical residency and surgical oncology fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami, Florida. She practiced in Broward County in the Memorial Healthcare and HCA Healthcare Systems, specializing in general and breast oncology for nearly 15 years, until her retirement in December, 2019.
Dr. Yelverton brings a lifelong personal history as an orthopedic surgical patient to her patient encounters. Her own experience with multiple orthopedic operations, starting at age 6 weeks, includes bilateral total hip replacements and revisions, undergoing the first replacement at age 28 and the latest in 2016. Seeking an alternative pain management strategy to traditional medication led her to explore acupuncture treatments before, during and after her 2016 operation, a decision she found transformative both in her life and in her approach to patient care. She studied acupuncture initially in 2015 at the University of Miami and then acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine formally at the Atlantic Institute of Oriental Medicine, where she completed the Master’s Degree program and is currently finalizing her clinical doctoral (DAOM) degree.
Dr. Yelverton incorporated acupuncture into the care of her surgical patients as early as 2016, upon completion of the University of Miami program. Initially employing a medical acupuncture technique to mitigate surgical pain and accelerate postoperative recovery for her patients, her approach evolved as she continued to advance her education, reaching the truly integrative fusion of Eastern medical philosophy and Western medical science she uses with her patients today.
Expanding her interest and education in energy healing, Dr. Yelverton studied and underwent attunement in Reiki and kundalini healing, achieving the level of Reiki Master. She has undergone additional attunements to gift her to completely clear negative energies, clear and repair auras and to heal current and past lives. She now seamlessly integrates Reiki and kundalini healing into her sessions when needed to facilitate an even more profound impact to her treatments, particularly at emotional and spiritual levels of healing. She has also trained extensively in the use of the Aura PTL II Laser Acupuncture system, allowing her to treat patients who are uncomfortable with traditional acupuncture but still seek to benefit from its effectiveness.
